Pescadores (Fishermen), Portugal 1050’s
Nazaré and surrounding areas are in the news these days because of the extraordinary surfing opportunities that the ocean waves offer.
These photos, parte of the BIBLIOTECA DE ARTE FUNDAÇÃO CALOUSTE GULBENKIAN , offer a throw back to the life in the 50’s and before.
Ocean going in general and fishing in particular are part of the Portuguese people DNA. These photos document that era. The traditional clothing is on display along with the typical fishing boat design patterns. The backbreaking life and work is forever stamped in these faces of these people.
I believe these photos were taken by Horácio Novais, at one point photographer for the newspaper O Século.
These photos were made available through the Biblioteca de Arte of Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian. In the past I have seen these pictures published in several online places, Flickr, Pinterest, Mashable, etc. I think I manage to find 31 out of the 32 in the collection.
If you go to Lisbon, that’s a no-brainier. Go visit it!
