She was found in the Greek island of Samothrace (Samothráki) and thus also know as the Victory of Samothrace. She is one of the most beautiful sculptures left to us by the early Greek from the Hellenistic period. Her wings allowed her to travel with the speed to convey the news of victory and conquest. She was found in 1883 by a amateur French archeologist (I forget his name), in several pieces, although the head and arms were never found. I think that one of her wings was reproduced based on the other. I saw her once (1969) and I will never forget. I have to go back to the Louvre sometime.
